What is happening in Irvine?
On February 22nd, the Irvine City Council considered three animal issues:and after discussion including mandatory spay and neuter, whether to grandfather in existing businesses. Concerns from veterinarians over reduced revenues, and a host of other issues, the City minutes reflect the following:
ACTION:
Direct staff to further research ordinance language related to the following three proposed items and return to the City Council for adoption in 120 days:
1. Prohibition of retail sales of dogs/puppies and cats/kittens at retail establishments in Irvine.
2. Requirement that dogs and cats over the age of six months be spayed and neutered.
3. Ban traveling animal exhibit performances in Irvine.
This is how the CIty says they are proceeding.
From now until the third week in April they will be researching these, talking to as many people as want to give input and getting everyones ideas.
Toward the end of April they plan to put up a website with all the information and allow people to leave comments/suggestions.
In May they plan to have one or two community sessions where people can come and participate and address the research and the issues.
It sounds like they intend to listen to Irvine residents. The issue, as we know, is it is easy to make MSN sound so reasonable when it in fact kills more dogs and cats.
Concerned Dog Owners of California, and some Irvine residents, have a meeting (our second) with the City next week to present all our research information on effects of MSN, California MSN results, health issues, how licensing saves lives while MSN kills, etc. If there are specific items we need to present that you believe we do not have, please contact us at www.info@cdoca.org.
Anyone who is interested in being on a fax lists to get updates from the City as Irvine moves through this process should send an email to Jransom@ci.irvine.ca.us. And we will also keep you posted.
